About Cancer in B.C.

One in three of us is expected to hear the words, “you have cancer” in our lifetime.

The disease has touched us all and we have an opportunity to change the staggering statistics below.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in B.C., taking the lives of over 2,500 men and women each year. This is why a comprehensive research project is underway at the BC Cancer Agency where researchers and clinicians are developing new early detection technology and unlocking the genetic detail that explains what makes these cancers spread.

Prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer effecting men today. Over 3,600 men will be diagnosed in our province this year. When caught early prostate cancer is often curable, but for those diagnosed with late-stage disease, researchers at the BC Cancer Agency are developing new drug therapies with promise to shrink even to most aggressive tumours.

Colorectal cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer for men and women. When caught early it’s highly treatable, and if you’re over 55, there is a new screening program available to you. BC Cancer Agency researchers are also uncovering new information about colorectal cancer, and most recently found a significant link between the disease and a type of bacteria. This could lead to new treatment techniques and prevention strategies.

Over 24,000 British Columbians will be diagnosed with cancer this year. By taking part in Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer, you will help us move one step closer to our vision of a World Free from Cancer.
