People Make The Difference

Dollars alone don’t conquer cancer. It’s the skill and dedication of the more than 1,000 staff at The Campbell Family Cancer Research Institute, and the efforts of people like you, that make The Princess Margaret one of the top 5 cancer research centres in the world.

DID YOU KNOW?

Dr. Mary Gospodarowicz – Medical Director of The Princess Margaret Cancer Program/UHN
Dr.Mary Gospodarowicz received her medical degree from the University of Toronto and holds specialty certifications in internal medicine, medical oncology and radiation oncology.

She is engaged in active clinical practice of radiation oncology, treating patients with malignant lymphomas and genitourinary cancers. Her research interests include clinical trials evaluating the role of radiation therapy in lymphomas, prostate cancer, bladder cancer and testis cancer. Dr. Gospodarowicz has authored over 250 peer-reviewed papers, book chapters and letters. Currently, her major interest is in developing and implementing image-guided precision radiotherapy. With longstanding involvement in late effects research, she has an interest in survivorship clinical programs and research. In addition, she has a major interest in cancer staging and prognostic factors.

Dr. Mary Gospodarowicz has served on various provincial, national and international committees. Having served as member of the Executive Committee of UICC (Union for International Cancer Control), she has been elected to the UICC Board of Directors of UICC and serves as chair of the UICC Membership Committee.

In addition, she is a member of the Board of Directors of the International Extranodal Lymphoma Study Group, the Scientific Advisory Boards of the Lymphoma Foundation of Canada, and the American Society of Clinical Oncology International Affairs Committee.

Dr. Ben Neel – Director of The Campbell Family Institute/OCI/UHN
Growing up in the Philadelphia area, it may well have been the influence of the ‘Broad Street Bullies’ that pointed Dr. Neel away from hockey and, thankfully for The Princess Margaret, towards science.

Dr. Neel earned his Ph.D. in Viral Oncology from Rockefeller University in 1982, and his M.D. from Cornell University Medical School in 1983. His graduate work on oncogene activation by slowly transforming RNA tumor viruses was judged one of the 50 most important discoveries in cancer research by the journal Science.

Dr. Neel was recruited for The Princess Margaret from his positions as Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Director of the Cancer Biology program at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre in Boston, Massachusetts. An internationally recognized expert in the field of cellular signal transduction.

Dr. Neel has particular experience in biology regulation of protein-tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs). PTPs represent a large family of enzymes that play a very important role in cellular signaling within and between cells.

A top scientist and experienced clinician, Dr. Ben Neel understands how clinical care and science need to be integrated for the benefit of cancer patients. Dr. Neel is committed to translating the best research at The Princess Margaret into clinical outcomes.
